Alex Sultoon is an award-winning filmmaker and all round creative and has made 5 short films since starting at Met Film School in late 2017, all of which have had festival selections, screenings and awards from around the world.
He grew up in Chigwell on the outskirts of London and studied Medicine and History & Philosophy of Science at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge before completing his medical training at the Royal Free & University College Medical School in London.
He then trained as an eye surgeon, becoming a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and worked in the eye unit of hospitals in North London for 15 years, specialising in therapeutic laser treatments.
He has always been creative with a long interest in film, music, writing and art. At Cambridge, he was film reviewer for The Cambridge Student and was lucky enough to interview the late Anthony Minghella and Mike Leigh. He subsequently made some short films, winning a Peter Kittel Award for young filmmakers.
Also an accomplished musician and songwriter, he has written and recorded many songs and performed in venues across London and on local radio.
In 2017 he discovered a part-time filmmaking course at Met Film School, based in Ealing Studios in West London, tutored by director Emma Lindley. He completed his first film, Blind As Love in 2018 which went on to win a swathe of awards and festival selections from Canada to New Zealand.
With his passion for movie-making, he decided to pursue films full time and has undertaken further intensive training in acting at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, studying Shakespeare and texts, screenwriting with Robert McKee and producing with Gareth Wiley.
He loves every aspect of filmmaking and the creative process and through the invaluable training of making Straight 8 films, is comfortable and enjoys shooting in both analogue and digital formats.
His experience as a musician also lends itself to filmmaking, as he composes, performs and records his own music in a hybrid DAW-based studio with classic analogue outboard gear, with components from Prism Sound, UA and Neve.
This also functions as an edit suite, with a complete Blackmagic Design based workflow with Pocket Cinema Camera, colour grading panel and DaVinci Resolve Studio.
He also enjoys painting and graphic design, studying under internationally exhibited fine artists Marguerite Horner and Tony Swann and has fun designing production pieces, posters, logos and now websites - QED!
When not making films, he can be found cycling, running, cooking or looking at the stars.
He continues his ophthalmology practice part-time and is excited about future film projects, which will all be posted here so check back for the latest updates!
